The Forty-Second State
The Washington Quarter features a king salmon leaping out of the water, with Mount Rainier in the background. Washington – as well as the Pacific Northwest – is renowned for its salmon, which has become a symbol of the state. Another important symbol is Mount Rainier, a massive active volcano that sits in the center of Mount Rainier National Park. It is 14,410 feet high, and the peak is covered with over 35 square miles of snow and glaciers.
