Personally signed in 1801 by President Thomas Jefferson and Secretary of State (and future President) James Madison.
Thomas Jefferson and James Madison were among America’s most important “founding fathers.” Jefferson drafted and signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776, while Madison signed the original U.S. Constitution in 1787. Their signatures are among the most prized in American history. Remarkably, this rare one-of-akind document bears BOTH their signatures. It was personally signed in 1801 by Jefferson during his first year as President, as well as by Madison, who was Jefferson’s Secretary of State. Madison succeeded Jefferson as President in 1809, so this is a rare example of an official U.S. government document signed by two Presidents. The document permitted a ship to export American goods; without this signed “passport,” American ships were prohibited from trading with Europe. A few small areas of light wear do not detract from the document’s importance or overall appeal. The two signatures were officially “canceled” by U.S. government agents, which adds to the document’s historic value. A rare document like this will be the highlight of your home or office.
