In 1849, the U.S. Mint struck the very first $20 gold coin in American history. The Liberty Head gold coin was authorized by Congress to use up the vast quantities of gold coming from the California “gold rush.” It was struck with nearly one ounce of pure gold, making it the largest and heaviest gold coin issued for circulation at the time. Most Liberty Head coins were quietly withdrawn from circulation and melted by the U.S. government when a new $20 gold coin was introduced in 1907 … and many of the remaining coins were melted by the U.S. government in 1933. Just a fraction remain in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, so add one to your collection now!
